Update April 7, 2026

Hyperion will perform planned preventive maintenance work at the Hyperion BioEnergy Facility beginning on Saturday, April 11, 2026 at 6 p.m with an estimated end time of Saturday, April 18, 2026 at 6 p.m.

While this interruption takes place, as much biogas as possible will be combusted by standby boilers to heat the digesters. Any remaining biogas will be flared consistent with the Plant’s permit. Hyperion is taking all necessary precautions to minimize any potential impacts to the surrounding community. It is not expected that odors will be emitted during this procedure.

The BioEnergy Facility is a renewable energy facility located at Hyperion. It uses digester gas, a byproduct of wastewater treatment, to generate electricity and steam to power the Plant’s operations.

AB 1216 Wastewater Treatment Plants: Monitoring of Air Pollutants

On Oct. 10, 2023, Governor Gavin Newsom signed Assemblymember Al Muratsuchi's bill AB 1216 Wastewater Treatment Plants: Monitoring of Air Pollutants into law.

This bill states that effective Jan. 1, 2027, wastewater treatment plants in the state of California which meet certain criteria - specifically Hyperion - are required to conduct regular source monitoring for nitrogen oxides (NOx) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and monitor at its fence-line for pollutants of concern, including hydrogen sulfide, and to share that fence-line monitoring data with the public in real time.
